Asian-Style Ribs

Asian Ribs

This is one of my favorite ways to prepare ribs. Not the traditional barbecue sauce but it is loaded with asian-style flavors that are so tasty! I love to order ribs in restaurants but I hate how messy they can be since you eat with your hands. When you make them at home you don’t have to deal with that problem.

The slow cooker is a great way to get the rib meat nice and tender. Nothing worse than a tough rib that has no flavor. These Soy Glazed Slow-Cooker Ribs cook for 5-6 hours and come out super tender, then you broil them with the glaze for 2 minutes to get a nice crispy caramelized crust..mhhhh. Serve with Peanut Noodles and a green vegetable like bok choy.

The ribs are so good and fall off the bone tender. 😛 Make sure you get low-sodium soy sauce or they can be a little salty, even without any extra salt added. You can use any pork rib like spare ribs – I happen to use baby back ribs. The recipe is courtesy of The Crepes of Wrath.

What you need:

  • 4 pounds of pork rib
  • 1/2 cup of low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup of ponzu sauce (or make your own additional 1/4 cup of soy sauce and half the juice of an orange)
  • 1/2 cup of packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 6 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 2-inch piece fresh ginger, finely grated or minced
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • scallions thinly sliced
  • sesame seeds for garnish

What to do:

  1. Make the glaze for the ribs by whisking together in a small bowl: soy sauce, ponzu sauce, light brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, Sriracha, and red pepper flakes – Put aside

  2. Prepare slow cooker by spraying inside with non-stick cooking spray. If pork ribs are too long for slow cooker cut in half and place in the bottom of slow cooker. Pour the sauce over the top of the ribs. Cook on high 4-5 hours or low 7-8 hours – or until tender.

  3. When ready to eat, carefully remove ribs from slow-cooker and place on a baking sheet.

  4. Pour sauce from slow cooker into a small sauce pan. Whisk together cornstarch and water then pour into sauce. Bring to a rapid boil and let the sauce thicken and reduce.
  5. Baste ribs with on top and bottom covering well. Broil for 2 minutes until the ribs begin to bubble. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced scallions.
